Behind the Scenes at Klein Tools

We at Haus of Tools had the privilege of touring Klein’s manufacturing headquarters and factory floor located in Mansfield, Texas. The Dallas-Fort Worth area is one of the fastest growing urban centers in the country and certainly feels like it. The metroplex has a vibrant atmosphere with thriving businesses and an industrious culture. It’s clear why Klein chose this to be the center of their production. The generous invitation given to us by Klein was a great experience that allowed us to personally witness their process and better understand their commitment to quality.

We visited the headquarters and poked around the factory while we were there. Our tour guides were wonderful hosts, patiently answering our many questions and showing us the magic behind their assembly lines. They provided us with headsets that provided direct radio communication between wearers while protecting our hearing. The machinery on the factory floor was very loud, with a distinctive process that made use of manpower and machinery. One of the most impressive sites was their heat treatment and hardening facilities. They used what looked to be large metal cauldrons to forge their wire strippers. For the next step, the tools went through a two-part handle dipping process. These pliers were sent on to quality assurance where a veteran workforce ensures consistency in feel and quality in operation to finalize the distinctive Klein plier that so many tradesmen use every single day.

As we moved through the facility, we spoke to plenty of workers who ecstatically explained the fine details of their process. We saw them create screwdriver handles by injecting colored pellets into molds. The handles were meticulously organized and readied for the blade insert, which perfectly sculpted them together. Once the product was finished, it was brought to the distribution hub. This warehouse was massive, with towering stacks of pallets awaiting shipment. The sheer scale of the operation left us in awe.

We left with a deep appreciation for the process and admiration for the craftsmanship that goes into it. Getting to witness the skill and care that goes into every tool was a sight to behold. It was great to see that some tools are still manufactured in America. All of us here at Haus of Tools would like to extend a heartfelt thanks to Klein for their hospitality and their dedication to toolmaking.
